Frank Buchwald
Time Art
Frank Buchwald believes that a common mistake of our time is the belief that machines are solely products and artifacts of human planning, design, and manufacture.
Working on the machine lights was for him a guarantor and a constantly new examination of something hidden that interweaves and shapes the sphere of the machine like a secret principle.
Identity
Frank Buchwald’s studio was established in 1998. The studio specialises in the design and manufacturing of furniture and lights, all exclusively hand-made from the Berlin workshop, situated in an 1871 industrial courtyard building.
This historical property also houses ateliers of artists and craftsmen in woodwork, wood carving and glass fabrication. The work ranges from traditional metal work to modern technologies such as laser cutting - a unique and creative combination of both classic and modern.
In 2002 Frank Buchwald shifted the focus of the studio to a purely artistic one so as to concentrate primarily on the development of the Machine Lights.
New examination
“For me, the idea of the machine lights developed over many years of dealing with the nature of modern technology, especially the mechanical artifacts of the industrial age. It is associated for me with the realization that an independent reality which withdraws itself from human access, exists behind the manifest appearances of mechanical objects and secretly determines the world of the machines.”

The Time Machine I is the newest evolution in the work of Frank Buchwald. Each and every detail has been manually handcrafted: from design, construction, and detailed workmanship of the clock to the six Nixie tubes fabricated by Dalibor Farny. The Time Machine I consolidates Frank Buchwald’s design and structural principles into a futuristic work of art whose dynamic emphasis is dominated by the machine-like character of the design: the form is compact and vigorous and the proportions perfectly executed.
